Kaitlin Armstrong Ordered to Pay $15M to Family of Slain Cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson
Kaitlin Armstrong, who was convicted of killing the famous cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson, was ordered to pay $15 million to the Wilson parents. Armstrong refused to respond to the civil lawsuit when it was filed, so the $15 million was awarded through a default judgment. Attorney Randy Howry of Howry Breen & Herman, LLP, who was hired to represent the Wilson parents, still sees the outcome as a tremendous win for the grieving family.
In the past, many tragic murder cases have been followed by movie and book deals that often benefit the person who was convicted of committing the violent act. Attorney Howry explained that the primary purpose of the lawsuit was to move the Wilson family in front of any profits Armstrong might hope to gain through such deals. “If there is ever any financial benefit afforded to Kaitlin Armstrong, my clients stand in front of her. The family needs to be compensated first,” Attorney Howry said.
Of course, the wrongful death lawsuit was also meant to compensate the Wilson family for the emotional distress they endured after the murder of their beloved daughter. Multiple family members, including Anna’s brother, explained in the lawsuit how their lives and well-being had been permanently scarred by Armstrong’s criminal actions, which are believed to have been rooted in jealousy. $10 million of the $15 million judgment was meant to reflect the emotional suffering and non-economic harm experienced by the Wilson parents.
